Before I went to school I already knew that c-a-t spelt “cat,” and since, like most of her contemporaries, my mother stayed at home when the children were young, I imagine it was she that taught me. Soon, though, I was at school, devouring everything printed that I could find. By today’s standards, the books were primitive, with their bright primary colours and simple illustrations without microchips or sound effects, but they were effective.
