New Dashboard: China-US Rhetoric Tracker

Hi folks,I’ve been writing this newsletter for well over six years now. In that time, I’ve built a fairly substantial archive of official Chinese government and Communist Party policy statements, documents and remarks. For a while, colleagues and I have been discussing how we might leverage new technology to tap into these archives, extract analytical insights, track trends, and create new data-based products.Today, I’m sharing the first result of that effort: a new tracker that my colleague Pranay Kotasthane, who runs the excellent Anticipating the Unintended newsletter on Substack, has engineered using the archives.What we’ve created is a dashboard that tracks how Chinese officials have characterised US policy and the China-US relationship since January 2021. Every statement is classified by speaker, tone (confrontational to conciliatory), and topic. We’ve also added our comments on the findings, particularly in the context of President Donald Trump’s expected visit to Beijing in mid-May.This will be an evolving project, which we will update periodically.
