Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin held talks in Beijing on Wednesday. In this special edition, I am pre-empting what will be the focus of tomorrow’s People’s Daily, by doing a deep-dive into the readouts and the outcomes from the summit.The Chinese readout of the Xi-Putin meeting says that the two leaders first held talks in a restricted-format and then in an expanded format.“Xi Jinping pointed out that this year marks the 30th anniversary of the establishment of the China-Russia strategic cooperative partnership and the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good-Neighbourliness and Friendly Cooperation Between China and Russia. By signing the treaty, China and Russia established in legal form the institutional foundation for long-term good-neighbourly friendship and comprehensive strategic coordination, enabling China-Russia relations to achieve leapfrog development. China-Russia relations have reached today’s height step by step because both sides have continuously deepened political mutual trust and strategic coordination with the perseverance of ‘standing firm amid a thousand grindings and ten thousand strikes’, expanded cooperation in various fields with the spirit of ‘ascending yet another storey’, and defended international fairness and justice and promoted the building of a community with a shared future for mankind with the courage of ‘remaining calm and composed as swirling clouds and turbulent winds pass by’.
